About SmartBuuks
An accountant in every business owner’s pocket.
We’re building simple, smart books for African small businesses - the shop, the salon, the haulage firm, the clinic - and for the bookkeepers who look after them.
Why we exist
Small businesses aren’t bad at bookkeeping. They’ve been badly served.
Most tools were built for card-and-cheque economies and trained accountants. Wave showed the world that free, simple accounting can serve millions of small businesses - then left Africa in 2020. Local bookkeeping apps came and went, some taking their users’ records with them. We think owners deserve better.
Books live in a notebook, a WhatsApp chat or nowhere
So owners can’t easily tell if they’re making a profit, or answer a lender or the tax office.
Money comes in by MoMo, bank and cash
Transfers between your own wallets look like sales. Fees hide. There’s no single view of your cash.
Tax rules keep changing
Ghana’s VAT Act 2025, Nigeria’s Tax Act 2025, Kenya’s eTIMS - everyone is re-learning at once.
Global tools weren’t built for you
Priced in dollars, full of accounting words, and treating mobile money as an afterthought.
Our mission
Give every African small business owner the calm confidence of having a good accountant in their pocket.
That means books that keep themselves, staff paid correctly and on time, and taxes that are never a surprise. It also means clean records - the kind that help a business borrow, grow and formalise.
We pair a careful, rules-based accounting engine with an AI Copilot. The engine does the maths. Copilot reads messy MoMo narrations, asks one good question, and explains the answer in plain English.
The core - invoicing, expenses, books and reports - is free, with no time limit. We earn money when we save you real time (Pro), pay your team (Payroll) or help you get paid online (small, clearly shown fees).

Accountants are partners
Where we are
Ghana first. Then Nigeria and Kenya.
We’re starting in Ghana, where MoMo is everyday money and the new VAT law means everyone is re-learning. Nigeria and Kenya follow, then Francophone West Africa and East and Southern Africa.
1 Ghana
Private preview now. MoMo-first, with VAT, PAYE and SSNIT built in.
2 Nigeria
Next. Payroll that already knows the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
3 Kenya
After that. M-Pesa native, with eTIMS invoices KRA will accept.
Work with us
We’re a small team hiring carefully in Accra, Lagos and Nairobi - support, partner management, payroll and tax, and engineering. If you love small businesses and plain words, we’d like to hear from you.
